About

Bio

SONY DSCKnitting design came out of my need to unleash my creativity after working for years in a very high-stress and emotionally taxing line of work. I’ve always been very creative and crafty from a young age, and am mostly self-taught in all my crafty endeavors. I’ve been knitting and making up my own patterns ever since I taught myself to knit in my early 30s in order to pass time during my long train commute to work and while I was taking care of my terminally ill mother. I think having sharp needles also helped me thwart off any unwanted conversations from strangers when I commuted to work. It helped me not have to pretend to be asleep on the train to get some quiet “alone” time.

My designs have been seen in several knitting books and magazines, including Interweave Knits, Twist Collective and Knitty. I’ve also partnered with yarn companies like Anzula,  Bijou Basin Ranch and Frog Tree in designing garments highlighting their yarns. My for-sale patterns can be found in the store.  Aside from knitwear design, my crafty diversions also include hand-painting yarn and fabrics, sewing and jewelry metalsmithing/fabrication.

Design: I am happy to collaborate with you to develop a design showing off the special qualities in your yarn. My design aesthetic focuses on classic shapes with modern and special details that fit and flatter a variety of sizes. I have worked with several digital and print publications, yarn shops and yarn companies in a variety of ways. I’ll be delighted to work with you in creating original work for your yarns, publications or yarn clubs, in licensing patterns or in providing pattern support for your yarn clubs.

Teaching: One of the things I love most about knitting is meeting other obsessive like-minded people s and sharing my knowledge. I am available to teach at your shop, event or meeting. I’m also available for private teaching sessions. My former career as a disability rights advocate and having to conduct workshops to a variety of audiences, from people with special needs to juvenile court attorneys/ judges, have honed my skills and sensitivity in teaching people with different learning styles and abilities. If you’d like to see a current list of classes I offer, please email me at support (at) annekuolukito (dot) com.

Tech Editing, Layout & Other Geeky Stuff: I’m a little nerdy. There’s lots of grading, math, geometry and spreadsheets involved in knitting design. I can help you edit your patterns or collections, layout your work or draw your charts and diagrams.

Consulting: Whether you are new or established in the yarn industry, I can help and assist you in growing your business. If you’re in other aspects of the handmade crafts industry and would like advice and would like to learn how to start and manage your own indie business, I can help! Inquire at support (at) annekuolukito (dot) com.
